Dark Chocolate Definitely Eases Emotional Stress

OK, honestly? It doesn’t take a scientist to tell me that chocolate makes me feel better. But they’re saying it anyway–new evidence that dark chocolate helps ease emotional stress was just published in “Metabolic Effects of Dark Chocolate Consumption on Energy, Gut Microbiota, and Stress-Related Metabolism in Free-Living Subjects.” I don’t know how my gut microbiota feel about it, but it’s doing wonders for my mood.
The study found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in the bodies of people feeling highly stressed. The study found that eating about an ounce and a half of dark chocolate a day for two weeks reduced levels of stress hormones in the bodies of people feeling highly stressed. The daily dose also partially corrected other stress-related biochemical imbalances. And that’s not all…Sunil Kochhar, and colleagues note growing scientific evidence that antioxidants and other beneficial substances in dark chocolate may reduce risk factors for heart disease and other physical conditions. Although studies in the past have suggested that chocolate may ease emotional stress, there was little evidence until now from research in humans on exactly how chocolate might have those stress-busting effects.
In the study, scientists identified reductions in stress hormones and other stress-related biochemical changes in volunteers who rated themselves as highly stressed and ate dark chocolate for two weeks. “The study provides strong evidence that a daily consumption of 40 grams [1.4 ounces] during a period of 2 weeks is sufficient to modify the metabolism of healthy human volunteers,” the scientists say. SGA BIG BANG is on the loose!!!

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 12:42 AM
Eeee!!! The Stargate Atlantis Big Bang Challenge, 2009, (aka SGA Big Bang) has at long last gone live!! There are a ton of big, thick, juicy stories there to really sink your fanteeth into, and huge, heaping side-dishes of art (liberally seasoned with videos!)--and...well, and now I'm quite hungry (thank you, O Metaphory Brain)...but also:

That's my art!! Right there!!! That picture on the home page, that links you to this year's or previous years' archives--that I made my own little self! ^____^ The same is true of the banner at the top of the main page, if you choose the "Blueprint" skin. The banner is actually mondo wide, to trick out even the most high-res, widescreen monitor, so if you have one of those, tune it in to get the full effect!

If you'd care to see the other wee bit o' fanart that I entered, it's entitled "Into the Depths," and it accompanies an enormously fun fic by [info]writerjc called "Children of the Abyss." The fic came first, and was the inspiration for my pic (and for a video by Valika--check that out too!). I could really have worked for another whole month on the picture and given it more depth and detail, but seeing as how this is the very first ever fan-challenge I've participated in, I'm ever so glad just to have handed it in on time, and to have made my essential concept visible. Next time, maybe I'll try focusing on just part of a story to illustrate, instead of the whole darn thing??! (Assuming by that time I'll have learned some kind of lesson or something!)

Hysterical Battlestar Galactica video, with a twist... and I'm not even a BSG fan!

If you could choose one super-power, what would it be and why?

Personally if I had a choice I wouldn't choose a cliché superpower like say flying, superstrength or some combination of the two and end up just another superhero (or wanna be superhero as would probably be my case). I see myself more as someone who works in the background than as a frontline fighter, so naturally I'd choose something that would compliment this. I think I would prefer to have something a little more discrete (and humanely possible) like phtotgraphic and/or muscle memory or an extremely powerful strategic brain.

That being said, if people did randomly start developing strange and amazing powers, I'd probably be the one who ended up being able to transform into a purple guinee pig or have some other useless powers somewhere along those lines.
And here are the links to videos and blog entries/articles from the Stargate conventions with Joe Flanigan, Jason Momoa, Paul McGillion (Armageddon, Los Angeles Creation Con) and more.

Video and blog links below the cut )

The following is a compilation of links found via Google, Twitter, etc. on publicly accessible blogs, photo sites, etc., on the following conventions. No copyright infringement meant on intended by posting little snippets. Just a tease to make you visit the site.

Sex not Stargates Brings Fans to SG-1/Atlantis Expo
Love in a Wormhole: SG-1/Atlantis Convention

Excerpt from this 11/12/2009 article, which has a nice picture of Joe Flanigan in it...

An audience of predominantly middle aged women gathered the weekend of Nov. 6-8 at the Los Angeles Marriott at LAX for Creation Entertainment’s Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Convention for a chance to melt at the sight of the Beatles of Stargate — hotties Michael Shanks, Joe Flanigan, Ben Browder, and perhaps the Ringo of the group, Paul McGillion.

Hee, it was a fun article to read, and also shows that conventions are NOT just teenagers (I think that may be reserved for Twilight conventions).

CW to air 2-hour Justice Society-themed SMALLVILLE movie

Excerpt: Entertainment Weekly has learned that the CW are planning to air the upcoming Justice Society-heavy Smallville two-parter (“Society” and “Legends) as a two hour movie event on January 29th 2010. Penned by comic bookwriter Geoff Johns, the television movie will feature the arrival of Justice Society members Hawkman (Michael Shanks), Doctor Fate (Brent Stait), Stargirl (Britt Irvin), and the return of Phil Morris as Martian Manhunter. The storyline apparently involves Clark crossing paths with the Justice Society characters, who have come out of retirement to meet up with an old foe.

and.... got an email from Creation. David Hewlett will be doing the April 2010 Vancouver Stargate con in Vancouver. Ah, to dream. He's there, Jason, Joe and more....(including Brian J. Smith of SGU, whom I honestly wouldn't mind seeing).  Gold tickets are $579. Heck, it's the airfare, the hotel, etc. and photo ops that would kill me. I need a new car.... Drat, wish they'd do a con like that on the EAST coast.

And guess I'll be watching SMALLVILLE again. Haven't watched it in years...

A fan made a video from Stargate Atlantis’ “Vegas” episode using Johnny Cash’s ‘Solitary Man’ song. I like :)

Veterans Day

Just a couple things... an excellent article/opinion piece on the true cost of war...

On Veterans Day, feeling the cost of war...
Afghanistan was abstract, until my friend's flag-draped coffin came home...

Full story at http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-abraham11-2009nov11,0,16249.story

And Damian Kindler posted this link on his twitter today. Someone gathered together reunion videos, of veterans coming home and being greeted by their pets. Very heartwarming. I never knew a dog's tail could wag that fast!

I offer the following particularly for those who have paid the supreme price and those who serve today:

I really hate not having an english spellcheck or even an english dictionaryt to verify my spelling. At least when I m on my school laptop I can usually access the internet and google the correct spelling, but when I'm on my ipod (which is the case most days) correct spelling is left to the wayside as I concentrate more on getting a semblance of the correct word onto the screen.
It annoys me so much. Enough of my rant though, I actually have some news today.

First off, I finally got a job! I start at Subway later this week. Everyday that I come into work I get a free 12 inch sub, this makes me very happy.

Secondly... I figure if I ignore it it'll go away. Midterms have started at school. Report cards will be comming out soon. My impressions on the subjets so far are:

Biologie 20 (en ligne): Okay
Chimie: Okay/Good
Études Sociales: Good
Français 30-1: good as it can be
Français 20-1 (en ligne): Near impossible
Maths 30 Pur: Good
Physique: Good
French 30 (FSL): Awesome !

What really makes my head spin is that Français 20-1 is harder than Français 30-1, I understand 30 and as far as I know I have a half decent grade. I'm getting help in 20.
I told them at the beginning I didn't want courses online, they asked if I wanted to graduate or not.
According to most of the teachers I'm doing very well for someone who only learned the language last year.

And last but not least and still slightly school related: I now have to go to la salle de musculation two times a week and there I get to do fun stuff like stairmasters and treadmills. And I also was ellected to the school council par aclimation (meaning no-one else in my grade ran)

Oh and Universtiy wise I have narrowed down my choices to the University of Ottawa or the University of Calgary to study Political Science. I can't decide which one; U of O the largest bilingual university in North Aerica right next to the parliment buildings or U of C, the university of my friends, in the city where I already live and work? Any thoughts?

Flashpoint returning to CBS

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 7:26 PM
Okay, my condolecences to fans of CBS' Numb3rs show. It's being cut show, and cancelled, and according to one article, CBS will slot in Flashpoint in the Friday, 10:00 p.m. slot come February. Now, I suppose Sanctuary will be on then, but for me, it's a no-brainer. Flashpoint! Sanctuary will repeat at midnight so I can catch it then.

I'm a happy camper, well, come February, that is...

Meanwhile, had a nice 'Indian summer' day today, which meant I painted two outside doors so now at least they'll look decent through the winter. Ack, darn, ,should have done something on the cellar door. Oh, wait, maybe tomorrow. No, darn. have to work. *headdesk* Did get a lot of leaves raked and afterwards, immediately took shower, and there, spinning in the water - deer tick! - evil purveyor of Lyme Disease! Down the drain it went. Die die die....

Fort Hood

  • Nov. 5th, 2009 at 2:36 PM
By now you have no doubt read/heard about the shootings at Fort Hood. For those of you who are not familiar with
Ft. Hood, it is the Army's headquarters for heavy armor.................
They are now reporting that the shooters as well as the victims are all soldiers.
**sighs**
I am frankly NOT surprised this has happened. The suicide rate and the PTSD rate is significant now.
In addition to that the Army has been using what is called STOP LOSS
A stop loss is when your time is up and you want to discharge and the military denies the request
and instead ships you off to wherever they decide you are needed.
I am somewhat knowledgeable due to what happened in my own
family.
When my father put in his papers at 25
the Navy denied him retirement and instead gave him two options:
1) they could cut accompanied or
2) unaccompanied
These were his only options. Mom had put money down on a house here in Oregon and he had even
been offered a job.
The Navy determined he was needed so were uninterested claiming that his
specialty was in high demand.
There have been over 81, 000 stop losses connected to Iraq and Afghanistan
I cannot but believe that that is part of the stress in addition to the daily grind that has created this scenario
at Ft. Hood AND am not surprised that the shooting took place in the readiness center........ie those getting
ready to deploy or have just returned.......
I witnessed significant morale problems from those who had come out of sea duty into equally grueling
conditions on shore.
That is the same thing the troops at Hood are in right now.........
I just wish Washington had a clue, but they just commit and don't seem to consider what it is doing to
the bodies and minds of those who serve.

***Steps down off soapbox***

Although part of his face is shaded, if you look closely you can see the eyes....................
